Setting up your Computer - Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
OS X 10.3 (Panther)
The first step in getting set up to work on Transana's source code on the Mac is to make sure you have the right version of OS X.
Transana does not run on OS X 10.2 (Jaguar).
Transana works on OS X 10.3 (Panther) on a PowerPC Mac. (Intel Macs require OS X 10.4 or higher.) These instructions describe setting up a Mac OS X 10.3 computer for working with Transana's source code.
Transana also works on OS X 10.4 (Tiger) on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. If you are using OS X 10.4, please see the Mac OS X 10.4 Universal setup instructions.
I have not tried running Transana from source code on OS X 10.5 (Leopard). However, it should work. The setup instructions should be similar to the 10.4 instructions.
Some Python modules and components necessary for running the Transana source code require that you compile them on the Mac. This means you need to have a functioning C compiler. If you don't have gcc (a c compiler) installed on your system, you should install an appropriate version of the X-Code Tools. It ships with OS X 10.3 on a supplemental CD, and it is available for download from Apple.
The next step is to set up Python.
